RACHEL'S CHALLENGE COMMUNITY EVENT AT BRENTWOOD CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Brentwood Christian School is hosting a team from Rachel's Challenge on Monday, December 5, for a full day of activities devoted to creating and maintaining a climate of kindness and compassion on our campus. We invite parents and community members to the evening community event. Our schedule for the day includes:
  • A one-hour secondary assembly (grades 6-12)
  • A one-hour elementary assembly (grades K-5)
  • An hour-and-a-half secondary student leadership training
  • A 7:30-8:30 p.m. community and parent assembly, to which you are invited
All of these events on Monday will take place in our new theater. The school will continue activities and events throughout the year to sustain the momentum we hope to build on this special day.

BCS administrators and teachers have been concerned that, even in a Christian school and even with all the strong moral influence of our wonderful families, we still see unkind behavior in students at our school. Any time a child is hurt by another's rude attitude or words or actions, we know that we are not achieving our mission as God would have us do it. From what we had seen and heard, we believed that a day-long Rachel's Challenge event would be a strong and positive way to address that problem and build a more loving and compassionate school culture.

Please join us at 7:30 Monday evening, where you will hear a stirring summary of what was presented to students during the day and will learn about the potential lasting effects of Rachel's Challenge. Please feel free to invite other family members and friends from church or community. This message is something that everyone needs to hear.

Baptist Community Services Strengthens Commitment to BCS

Representatives of the former Sybil B. Harrington Trust and the Baptist Community Services of Amarillo visited Brentwood Christian School for the first time last week and were so impressed that they decided to continue donations to the Center for Science and the Arts indefinitely beyond the current $250,000 commitment.

BCS receives 15 percent of quarterly oil and gas royalty receipts from certain Harrington Funds, which are administered by Baptist Community Services, and has received $154,000 to date, an average of $30,000 per year. These payments were to have ended when the $250,000 commitment is fulfilled in about three years.

Laurie McWeeney, adviser to the Harrington Funds, and Steve Dalrymple, CEO of the Baptist Community Services, visited the K-2nd grade chapel, toured the campus, and ended with a tour of the Center for Science and the Arts last week, escorted by Jeff Boyd, who helped BCS get the grant.  A former BCS board member, Jeff is the father of BCS senior Carter Boyd and 2010 graduates Hanna and Abbie Boyd.

Jeff said Ms. McWeeney “liked everything about the school. It was great to see someone who had no prior experience or connections to BCS be so impressed.”  Mr. Dalrymple contacted Jeff the next day with the news that the fifteen percent quarterly payments would be extended indefinitely.

A portrait of Sybil B. Harrington and a description of her generosity to the Arts, which included a major gift to the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin, has been placed in the CSA.

BCS Wins Old Navy Playscape

BCS won a playscape and $5,000 from Old Navy and TerraCycle, a recycling company, in September after teacher Michelle Mohrmann filled out a survey last April. Ten representatives from area Old Navy stores attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the lower elementary playground on Tuesday afternoon, Sep. 27.

Students from kindergarten through second-grade will use the new equipment, which was made from recycled flip flops and milk cartons. The playscape will accompany the various play structures already out on the playground, such as a merry-go-round, a boat, and a swing set.

More than 20 parents and volunteers helped set up and assemble the playscape last Friday and Saturday, Sep. 23-24. On Friday, the volunteers dug the footers for the playscape to go into the ground and built the retaining border. The next day they assembled the playscape, poured the concrete into the footers to secure and stabilize the new structure, and mulched the ground around it.
