Baptist Community Services Strengthens Commitment to BCS

Representatives of the former Sybil B. Harrington Trust and the Baptist Community Services of Amarillo visited Brentwood Christian School for the first time last week and were so impressed that they decided to continue donations to the Center for Science and the Arts indefinitely beyond the current $250,000 commitment.

BCS receives 15 percent of quarterly oil and gas royalty receipts from certain Harrington Funds, which are administered by Baptist Community Services, and has received $154,000 to date, an average of $30,000 per year. These payments were to have ended when the $250,000 commitment is fulfilled in about three years.

Laurie McWeeney, adviser to the Harrington Funds, and Steve Dalrymple, CEO of the Baptist Community Services, visited the K-2nd grade chapel, toured the campus, and ended with a tour of the Center for Science and the Arts last week, escorted by Jeff Boyd, who helped BCS get the grant.  A former BCS board member, Jeff is the father of BCS senior Carter Boyd and 2010 graduates Hanna and Abbie Boyd.

Jeff said Ms. McWeeney “liked everything about the school. It was great to see someone who had no prior experience or connections to BCS be so impressed.”  Mr. Dalrymple contacted Jeff the next day with the news that the fifteen percent quarterly payments would be extended indefinitely.

A portrait of Sybil B. Harrington and a description of her generosity to the Arts, which included a major gift to the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin, has been placed in the CSA.
