Nolan and Ruth Ryan, lifelong Texans, spent the majority of their lives in Alvin, where they met and later married. In 2003 they relocated from Alvin to Georgetown to be closer to their three married children, Reid, Reese and Wendy, and their seven grandchildren. Nolan’s professional baseball career began in 1965 when he was signed out of Alvin High School by the New York Mets. By 1968 he was pitching in the Major Leagues, thus beginning his 27-year, four-decade career. He is most well known for the many records he holds, including seven no-hitters and 5,714 career strikeouts. He was named to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999 in his first year of eligibility.
Since retiring from baseball as a player in 1993, Nolan has not slowed his pursuit of success off the field. He has owned and operated several banks, a restaurant, and is still active in the ownership and operation of several cattle ranches. He, along with son Reid and a group of investors, was responsible for bringing the Round Rock Express baseball team to the Austin area in 1998. He is now the owner and president of the Texas Rangers. Ruth’s pursuits have been no less impressive. Her commitment to the leadership of foundations across Texas is evident, especially when they involve children. She currently serves as president of the Nolan Ryan Foundation, and also serves on the board for the Texas Rangers Foundation, which is committed to enhancing education and youth activities and improving communities. She is also on the board of Heart Gift of Fort Worth, an organization that provides life-saving heart surgeries to terminally ill children.
