Jay Burcham, President, has been associated with Brentwood Christian School for over 25 years. He is a graduate of Abilene Christian University with both a Bachelor of Science and Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology. He went on to complete post-graduate work at Stanford-Saybrook in Neurological Psychology.
Jay served on the BCS board for eleven years and as Board Chair for four years. Before coming to Brentwood Jay co-founded and co-owned a company that provided educational and behavioral resources to schools across the country. Jay is the father of 3 BCS alumni and is married to his wonderful wife Sylvia, a long-time 1st grade teacher for Brentwood. For many years Jay has professed his three loves in life – Our God, Our Family, and Our School. Jay and his family attend Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ.

Carol Johnson, Secondary Principal, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication from New Mexico State University and a Master degree in Educational Administration from Texas State University. She has over 10 years of classroom teaching experience as well as 7 years in the role of Assistant Principal at the secondary level with Round Rock and Leander ISD. Carol holds a Principal certification with the Texas State Board of Education. She and her husband attend East Side Church of Christ.

Leah Smith, Middle School Principal & Academic Advisor, Earned a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences from Texas State University and a Master of Education from Angelo State University, as well as being a certified school counselor. Jeremy Thornton, Elementary Principal, is a graduate of Lubbock Christian University with a Master’s in Educational Leadership and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. He is a Texas certified Principal K-12 and also holds certifications in Professional Development and Appraisal, Instructional Leadership Development, and Advanced Educational Leadership. Jeremy has 20 years of teaching and administration experience working in private and public school systems including more than two years as the Associate Director for Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS). He and his family attend Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ and have a son who is a current student at BCS.

Director of Fine Arts, Orchestra & Head Swim Coach
Jason Montier is the Director of Fine Arts, Orchestra and the head swim coach at BCS. Jason joined the Bear family in 2023 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Instrumental Music from East Central University and a Texas Educator Certification in Music for grades PK-12. Jason has 20 years of experience teaching band and orchestra, and in 2022 was named the TAPPS 5A Fine Arts Director of the Year while at Grace Community School in Tyler, TX. Jason has been a member of the TAPPS State Music Committee since 2011, serving initially as Region Chair for East Texas, and since 2015 has served as State Music Chair. In addition to being part of eight TAPPS state championships, Jason is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Orchestra Directors Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and the Association of Texas Small School Bands. His oldest daughter, Jennifer, graduated in the class of 2025 at BCS and he has two additional Bears in daughters Juliet (class of 2029) and Jewel (class of 2030). He and his family, including his wife, Angela, attend Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ.

Kyle Maxfield, Head Football Coach & Associate Athletic Director, is a Texas A&M graduate. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Texas A&M, a Master’s Degree from TAMU-Commerce, and Texas principal certification. While attending college (1991-1994) he lettered as a defensive back and special teams player, Coach Maxfield was part of a team that was 28-0-1 in Southwest Conference play, earning three straight Southwest Conference Championships. After beginning his coaching career in the Mesquite and Cypress Fairbanks ISDs, Coach Maxfield got his first head coaching job at Olton in 1999.

Kimberly McLain, Director of Admissions, earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from The University of Texas at Tyler. She has over thirty years of business leadership experience, both in the corporate and private sector. Both of her kids are BCS graduates having attended kindergarten through twelfth grade. Joe Rispoli is a recent addition to Brentwood Christian School, bringing over 25 years of experience in Christian education. He holds a Master’s degree in Education and Educational Leadership from California Baptist University. Throughout his career, Joe has taught in both public and private Christian schools and since 2006, he has held administrative positions at four different Christian institutions.
Before entering education, Joe enjoyed a successful career in the disaster recovery industry with a national company. He has also served in ministry as an elder, Pastor of Marriage & Family, and a national conference speaker, training others through The Truth Project and The Engagement Project. Along with his wife, Rhonda, Joe leads Christian Worldview studies in their home and at local churches.

Jennifer joined BCS in 2024 after serving as PTF President for 4 years. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas, specializing in interior design and business management. She worked for KB Home as an interior design consultant and studio manager for over 16 years prior to BCS. In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys quilting and reading. Rubi Zeledon brings over a decade of experience in academic and college counseling to Brentwood Christian School. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Social Sciences, and a Master’s degree in Human Resources Management, as well as specialized certifications in College Admissions Counseling, Neuropsychology and Inclusive Education.
Before joining BCS, Rubi served students in both the U.S. and internationally, most recently at the Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) in Austin and previously at the American Nicaraguan School, where she led college and school counseling efforts. Her work has included academic planning, socio-emotional support, college application guidance, standardized testing coordination, and developing individualized educational pathways. She has a deep passion for helping students grow with purpose and clarity as they prepare for the future.
Rubi and her family are proud to be part of the Brentwood Christian community. Her son, Mateo, is beginning his third year at BCS, and her daughter, Catalina, is joining as a kindergartener. As a Christian family, they are grateful for the way the school’s mission and environment align with their faith and values. Rubi firmly believes that joining Brentwood as Academic Advisor was part of God’s plan, and she is excited to serve and support students and families as they navigate their academic journeys.

Director of Communications, Head Girls Basketball Coach
Ethan Grant is the Director of Communications and head girls basketball coach at Brentwood Christian School. He also is the newspaper advisor and assists with yearbook. Ethan holds a Bachelor of Art in Mass Communications – Journalism with a minor in English from Texas State University. Grant began his career in newspaper, serving as Sports Editor for several metropolitan newspapers including, Allen, Plano, Frisco, Celine and Little Elm.
He transitioned into education in 2016 and has been coaching basketball for 15 years, including with the Dallas Mavericks organization as part of their summer hoop camp. Prior to arriving at BCS in 2023, Ethan spent three years at Midland Christian School, where he served as the head girls basketball coach and junior high girls track and field lead. He and his wife, Tristan, have three daughters earthside.

Fred Strietelmeier previously served on the BCS board from 1996 to 2019 and has rejoined in 2022. Fred is an electrical engineer retired from IBM. He received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He also received a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Rice University. Fred is a member of the Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ. He is married to Sondra, a retired BCS fine arts teacher, and they are the parents of a BCS graduate.

Born and raised in the Washington, DC area, Timothy (Tim) Weston has lived and worked in the Austin area since graduating from the University of Texas at Austin in 1996. Mr. Weston has been married to Laurie Weston since 1998. They have 3 children – Nick (BCS class of 2020), Abigail (BCS 2023) and Jack (BCS 2025). The Westons are members of Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ. In his work life, Mr. Weston is the president of MLA Geotechnical, an Austin, Texas based geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing firm that has been practicing in central Texas for more than 60 years. Mr. Weston
serves on the Boards of Director of the Greater Austin Contractors and Engineers Association (ACEA) and the Mainspring Schools. At BCS, you can find Mr. Weston coaching MS volleyball or watching varsity soccer and volleyball. In his personal life, Tim enjoys spending time with his wife and 3 children, traveling to concerts, finding new bands to enjoy, playing soccer and watching hockey.

Mary Caruthers joined Brentwood in 2025 as an Early Learning 3/4 teacher. Originally from Dallas, TX, Caruthers earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Promotion from the University of North Texas. Her previous experience includes secondary health, PE and cheerleading.

Krista Albertson joined the BCS family in 2025 as a fourth grade teacher. A graduate of Oklahoma Wesleyan University with both undergraduate and graduate degrees, Albertson recently received her Masters in secondary education and taught two years of second grade in Oklahoma.

Paul Morrow, a fifth-grade teacher, holds a B.A. in youth ministry and a M.Ed. in education from Lipscomb University. Lisa Warner serves as the drill team director, the musical theater choreographer, and Claw Crew sponsor. She holds a B.F.A. in Dance Education and M.Ed from Arizona State University. Post-graduation, Mrs. Warner taught dance for the local high schools and served as a guest choreographer for numerous high school programs and musical productions. Later, she served as an administrator at a high school and then a stay-at-home mom, but continued her passion for dance by teaching at local dance studios. She and her family attend First United Methodist Church of Round Rock.

Kelly Billiot joined BCS in 2025 teaching 6th-7th grade ELA. A native of Indiana who was raised in Austin, Kelly received her Bachelor’s of Science in Education from Baylor University.
Previously, she was the giving and fundraising coordinator at Rivergate Foundation and taught at Valor North Austin from 2021-2025. She is also the proud owner of Anthem Boutique. She and her husband, Jonathan, have four children, three of whom attend Brentwood Christian School.

Kara Chance is joined BCS in 2025 as an ELA teacher, working with both 7th and 8th grade students, as well as 6th grade drama.
Kara is a graduate of Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, concentrating in Public Relations, and a minor in Tourism, Hospitality, and Event Planning. She also has experience in coaching cheerleading and teaching English to international children abroad. He and his wife, Crystal, have been in the BCS community for 6 years; his daughter, Amayah, is currently in the 10th grade and a member of the state champion Lady Bellas.
Before becoming a teacher at BCS, he had a combined 27-year career with the State of California and the Social Security Administration focused on Social Security disability programs. He has over 30 years of ministry experience as a youth minister, associate minister, worship/praise leader, and ministering evangelist before relocating to Texas. He is also certified as an executive Coach, professional speaker, and trainer by John C. Maxwell.
Originally from Oakland, California, Greg holds a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development from California State University, Hayward (now CSU East Bay) and has continued post-graduate studies at Lubbock Christian University, East Oakland Bible Institute, and Golden Gate Bible Institute.

Carrie Hunter teaches Middle School social studies and Bible. She previously taught fifth grade for eleven years at Brentwood Christian. Carrie earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Oklahoma Christian University as well as a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Design from York College. She is certified in both elementary and secondary education. Ms. Hunter is a Brentwood Alumna, class of 2001, and she is a member of Georgetown Church of Christ.

Carly James teaches 7th and 8th grade science for the middle school staff and joined Brentwood Christian School in 2025. With extensive experience the past few years in math and science, she will be a valuable addition to the BCS community.
A graduate of Montana State University in 2023 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education (K-8), Carly taught two years at the Gallatin Gateway School in Bozeman, Montana before recently moving to Austin. Carly is originally from Santa Barbara, California, where her family still currently resides. Taylor Mayfield holds a B.A. in English from Harding University with a minor in Biblical studies and an M.A. in Composition and Rhetoric from Liberty University. He is the department chair for the English Department. Mayfield also serves as sponsor for the Chess Club and Film Appreciation Club. Emma Rektenwald brings a wealth of academic and teaching experience to her role as High School English Teacher at our Christian private school. Holding a Master of Arts in Media Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Music from Abilene Christian University, Rektenwald’s educational background is diverse and enriching. Her teaching journey includes roles as a Teaching Assistant at the University of Texas at Austin, where she facilitated courses on film history and media studies, and as a Substitute Teacher in the Dripping Springs Independent School District. Rektenwald’s dedication to student success extends beyond the classroom as demonstrated by her work as a Writing Consultant at both Abilene Christian University and the University of Texas at Austin. Mel Witcher is the HS Bible Department Chair. Mel earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Abilene Christian University, a Master of Music Education from North Texas University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Bible from Austin Graduate School of Theology. He teaches AP Government and Politics, Capstone Humanities, and Bible Foundations. Mel completed the Colson Fellow program in 2020, and has been named both TCSA and NCSA Teacher of the Year for outstanding contributions to Christian education. He and his family attend Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ, where Mel serves as an elder.

Ellie Ward graduated from Southwestern University this May with a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in business. She is teaching in the history department this year and assisting in multiple sports at BCS, including volleyball, basketball and softball.
A standout, five-sport high school athlete at Bishop Reicher in Waco, Ward is no stranger to private school. She went on from Reicher to a four-year letterwinner career at Southwestern for the women’s basketball team. She played in 96 career games during her four-year stint, scored over 800 points for the program, and was academic honor roll in the conference three times.

After a 30-year career in public school education, Pam Martin is joining BCS in the high school math department this year. She has worked at Cedar Park High School since 1998, serving as the department chair since 2018 with experience in various designations of Algebra & Calculus.
A graduate of Texas State University in San Marcos with a B.A. in Geography and a minor in mathematics, Pam has also worked as a UIL math coach and homecoming sponsor throughout her tenure in Leander ISD.

media assets for college science textbooks. Lisa is married and has
four children who attend Brentwood. Lisa has a passion for mission
work and has done short term mission work in St. Lucia, Jamaica,
Mexico, Malaysia, and Paraguay. From 2019-2022, the Kennedy family
worked as missionaries in Singapore. They worship with the Southwest
church of Christ where Lisa coordinates the Christian Women’s Studies

Yen-Ching holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Taipei University and a Master of Arts in Music, Voice Performance from Texas State University. She is credentialed as a Secondary Music Teacher in Taipei, Taiwan and is a member of the Maryland State Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association. Yen-Ching has over 10 years of experience teaching, conducting, and directing music and choirs. Most notably Yen-Ching served as Music Director and Conductor for the Greater Washington Taiwanese-American Choir in Potomac, Maryland, Music Director for the 2019 Taiwanese American Conference – East Coast and was invited by the Taiwanese government in 2017 to perform at the National Day celebration. Yen-Ching and her husband have two children, the oldest of which will attend BCS in the fall.

Caleb Rektenwald brings a wealth of musical expertise and educational experience to the role of band director. With a Bachelor’s in Music Education from Abilene Christian University and certifications in Music EC-12 and Google Educator Level 2, Caleb is well-equipped to lead and inspire students. His diverse performance background includes participation in esteemed ensembles like the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra and ACU Wind Ensemble. At LBJ High, Middle, and Elementary Schools, Caleb has demonstrated his leadership skills by designing marching band visuals, conducting rehearsals, and collaborating on concert programming. His commitment to music education is further evident through his clinical teaching experience at Cooper High School and Madison Middle School, where he mentored symphonic and jazz bands while addressing instrument maintenance needs. Caleb’s proficiency in multiple instruments and dedication to fostering musical talent make him an invaluable addition to any music program. Laurie Weston is joining the teaching ranks at Brentwood Christian School this year for a new elective: Applied Arts & Mechanics. A graduate of the University of North Texas, Laurie is also the leader of Parents in Prayer on campus.
A dedicated servant in many areas on campus, including Fine Arts Benefactors, pep rally coordination, set design and so much more, Laurie is married to Tim Weston, who is on the BCS Board of Trustees. In her spare time, she enjoys frequenting local Austin sporting events, has hiked the Appalachian Trail, and rode in the Houston Livestock Show.

Director of Basketball Operations; Head Boys Basketball Coach
Dustin is a graduate of Texas State University with a Bachelor of Arts in History & Kinesiology. Dustin’s previous experience includes tenures at Our Lady of the Lake University where he was the Men’s Assistant Basketball Coach, and New Braunfels Christian Academy, where he began his career as boys head coach and athletic director. Additionally, he time spent in Kosovo with The Basketball Embassy coaching and mentoring youth basketball teams.
At Brentwood, Karrer’s teams have won 100-plus games in his four years as head coach, including two consecutive runs to the TAPPS state final four in 2024 and 2025. He is the Director of Basketball Operations as well, coordinating all gym sports needs, and teaches Entrepreneurship and Personal Finance in the high school.

Cheyanne holds a bachelor of Science in Exercise Sports Science, as well as a Master’s of Business Administration, from Howard Payne University. Coach Lovelady has over 10 years of experience coaching volleyball at the club level, previous head coaching stops at Bangs and Brownwood and at year of coaching at her alma mater HPU. Lovelady started a club volleyball organization in her hometown of Brownwood, Texas in 2024.
She joined Brentwood Christian School in 2025 and believes her role is a daily opportunity to lead students to love God.
Cheyanne played collegiate volleyball at Howard Payne University from 2015-2018 and was the graduate assistant at HPU for the 2018-2019 season. Most recently, Lovelady served as the Head Volleyball coach at Brownwood High school. Coach Lovelady played for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes All-Star Team as a high schooler in 2014 and had the opportunity to coach the FCA All-Star team in 2022.

Amina recently joined Brentwood Christian School, where she manages financial reporting, payroll, compliance, and employee records to support the school’s mission of fostering students’ love for God and leadership through a Christ-centered academic environment.
Originally from Congo, Amina is fluent in English, French, Swahili, and Lingala, holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Economics, an Associate Degree in Theology and is currently preparing for the CPA exam while taking classes. She has experience as a Payroll Specialist at Austin Community College District, Executive Assistant at Caterpillar/Congo-Equipment, and Private Banking Agent at Trust Merchant Bank.

Cash Miller has been the boys soccer coach at BCS since 2010, save a two-year hiatus from 2018-2020, but is expanding his footprint in 2025. He is joining the full-time rank as Middle School Athletic Coordinator while retaining his soccer duties.
Miller’s two children, Mason (Class of ‘16) and Avery (Class of ‘18) are proud Brentwood School graduates. In addition to two-plus decades’ worth of soccer experience (including founding a USPL semi-professional club), Miller is the director of the LaserView Vision Correction Center in Austin.
A graduate of Webster University in Missouri, Miller loves teaching teamwork, discipline, and perseverance while leading athletes to love God and others through sportsmanship and integrity.

D’Aris Hall is the Nursery Director at BCS, joining in 2025. With 12 years of experience as a childcare director, D’Aris guides the newest program on campus with the newest blessings from God.

Karson joined BCS in September of 2019 after working as a Branch Manager for the Texas Region at Qal-Tek. In this roll he oversaw technical support technicians, the radiation certification and repair laboratory, and customer support personnel for the company’s highest volume profit center and southwest regional office. Karson served as district technical support for Conroe Independent School District his senior year in high school helping establish network security, setting up and maintaining servers as well as providing technical support to faculty. He has help desk and technical support experience and has worked in the oil & gas industry as the foreman for a hydrostatic testing station.

Rebecca is a graduate of Lake Washington Institute of Technology and is certified by the Texas State Board of Nursing as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. She has over 14 years of experience in various areas of the practice of nursing and is trained in adult and pediatric care including school nursing procedures. Rebecca and her husband are parents of three current Brentwood students.

Elena serves alongside the Admissions Director, Kimberly McLain, in the Admissions office. She started her Brentwood career as the Executive Assistant to the High School Principal, Carol Johnson. Prior to joining Brentwood, Elena held positions at Grace Capital Management, Austin Radio Network, and the Bridge Austin. She has an Associates Degree in Meeting and Event Planning from Austin Community College.

Naomi joined BCS in May 2025 as the high school executive assistant to the principal. She has been in education since 2018, where she began working in the field in her hometown of Marble Falls.
Her three children, Sofia, Roger and Nuvia, are all attending BCS this year and she and her family attend Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ. In addition to relishing her role in being a light to students just before they go out to the “big” world, Naomi enjoys playing soccer with her kids and the outdoors.

Penny Hagen is the Senior Executive Assistant to the President. She was born and raised in Austin and graduated from Sidney Lanier High School. Penny has over 30 years of administrative experience and has been devoted to Brentwood and its mission for even longer. She attends Round Rock Church of Christ.

Rita Thornton, Executive Assistant to the Middle School Principal, is a graduate of Lubbock Christian University with a Bachelor of Business Administration. She has over 10 years of experience teaching and working in an administrative role in several schools around Texas. She holds a teaching license in Business Education – Grades 6-12. Rita and her family attend Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ and have a son who is a current student at BCS.

Efrain Contreras returned to the BCS family in 2024 after previously serving as the head baseball coach for many years. He is the head softball coach and assists with elementary PE.
Contreras, originally from Puerto Rico, was a standout baseball player who was drafted and played several seasons of minor league baseball before moving into teaching and coaching. In addition to baseball, Contreras also had a stint as the head volleyball coach at BCS.

Full Time Substitute Teacher and Substitute Coordinator
Isabel brings a wealth of experience from her time as a School Aide at Forest Lake Christian School and Brentwood Christian School. Isabel also has hands-on experience in fostering a positive learning environment. With an Associate of Applied Arts Degree in Radio/Television/Film, she has a creative flair that she incorporates into her work with students. Isabel’s commitment to providing a nurturing and engaging atmosphere makes her a valuable addition to our school community.

Originally from Amarillo, TX, Max Maxfield joined BCS in the spring of 2025. He is the athletics operations manager, defensive coordinator for the football team and working with elementary PE.
A college football standout at Tarleton University, Maxfield lettered for the Texans while earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Kinesiology and Athletic Administration, respectively. He was part of two Lone Star Conference championship football teams. He is looking forward to helping shape young men into great leaders on the field and followers of Christ.

A decorated baseball player and coach, Calvin Schiraldi came on board as the varsity baseball assistant coach for the 2024 season. He is now an athletics operations manager, assisting with field maintenance, facilities and transportation.
Schiraldi has been a staple of the Austin-area baseball scene since the 1970s. He attended Westlake High School and the University of Texas at Austin, aiding the Longhorns in their 1983 College World Series victory. Schiraldi was named Most Outstanding Player of the series and a college baseball All-American that same year.
He was then selected in the first round of that year’s draft by the New York Mets and played for five franchises across eight years in Major League Baseball, including the Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers. Schiraldi and his wife, Debbie, have two children, one of whom, Lukas, who he coached while the head man on the diamond at St. Michael’s Catholic Academy.

Shamika Davis is Brentwood Christian’s Director of Extended Services, which includes Extended Day during the school year, the Nursery program (founded in 2025) and summer programming.

Katara Scott, Assistant Director of Extended Day, has served as a preschool teacher at Greenville Avenue Child Development Center, an administrative assistant for the City of Austin, and an Intake Specialist for Cigna Healthcare. However, her most relevant experience is the 6+ years she served as a site director for Texas Afterschool Centers on Education 21st Century. In this capacity, Katara served Richardson ISD, Katherine Anne Porter Charter School, and San Juan Diego Catholic High School. Katara and her husband Aaron attend East Side Church of Christ.

Ronnie Green graduated from Southwestern University with a bachelor’s in music education. He had ten years of teaching experience before coming to Brentwood. Ronnie is a member of the Wheless Lane Church of Christ.

Dorothy Caffey worked for Brentwood Christian School for nearly 20 years, retiring in 2017. Her love of students and youth has led her to many duties at BCS over the years, including extended day. She rejoined Brentwood Christian in 2025 as an assistant in the nursery.
Dorothy and her husband, Gerry, are active members in the Brentwood Oaks Church of Christ, where she has served in the children’s ministry, communion preparation and watching children during ladies’ Bible class.
A graduate of Abilene Christian University in 1977, Dorothy worked as a food service manager in Austin ISD for nearly 30 years in addition to her work at BCS.
