Leading Lives of Christian Leadership and Service

2025-26 Theme Scripture James 4:8a

“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

What does this verse mean to you?

As I look at the broader scope of James 4:1-10, this verse reminds me that I am not of this world and that God wants me to live according to His will. As I become closer to Him (draw near to God) then He will give me what I need in this world (He will draw near to me). – Diann Sloan, HS Science Department

How can students embrace this verse in their daily lives?

Students can draw near to God in many ways. Praying to Him as the day begins, throughout the day, and as the day fades. Prayer is a touchstone reminder of God’s sovereignty, love, and grace. Students can also connect to the Lord through the reading of HIs Word. Posting scriptures in desks or inside lockers can be helpful to stay close to the Lord throughout the school day. Having a heart of gratitude and thanking Him for His many blessings throughout each day is another way to draw near to God. Choosing to befriend the friendless and acting as the hands and feet of Jesus is a way to draw near to Him. – Carrie Hunter, MS History Department

What can parents do to guide their children to draw nearer to God?

Parents must constantly remind their kids that what they are doing and why they are doing it is to draw closer to God [and] help them understand that drawing close to God requires effort and intentionality. – Jay Burcham, BCS President

How have you seen God use this in our midst?

I think often these moments come out of trial or tragedy. When students are struggling, they are more likely to want to draw near to God out of necessity. We can prayerfully use these opportunities to draw them into God’s love and presence – Katie Smith, HS Athletics & Elementary PE

A bell rings at BCS

A bell rings at BCS. Usually, students to leave one class and make their way to another, hopefully without arriving late. But once a week the bell rings, and students do not go to class.

They go to chapel.

Chapel is a time where students and faculty come together in worship. Throughout the year students hear messages and testimonies from Christians of various backgrounds. Chapel also gives students the chance to participate directly in the spiritual formation of the BCS community.

Community Praise and Worship

  • All-Community Chapel

Once a month we come together as a community to worship. All students from every grade level, faculty, staff, parents, grandparents from far and wide watch and learn together. Our younger students are paired with older students, these chapel buddies sit together and over the year grow together. Ask any student from K4-12th grade and they will simply dote upon any chapel buddy they have had throughout the years.

  • Grade-Level Chapel

Once a month high school students worship with the classmates in their grade and middle school students divide into girls and boys. The goals of this monthly grade-level chapel are to create a more intimate setting where deeper relationships can be formed, to provide students with opportunities for spiritual leadership, and to allow students to experience spiritual practices that are more challenging in a larger group.
