Summer Reading
Incoming 3rd – 12th Grade Students and Parents,
One of our academic goals for Brentwood Christian School students is to increase the students’ reading skills and encourage them to develop an enjoyment of reading. Reading for pleasure is one of the absolute best ways to improve reading comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking, and writing skills – without even thinking consciously about it. In this regard, we have developed a summer reading program that includes both required and extra-credit reading for all grade levels.
Summer Reading Requirements
- Elementary Students grades 3rd through 5th must read the novel required for their grade level. Students will be tested on the novel within the first few weeks of school starting. Elementary students may also read up to three extra credit books for their grade level from the summer reading list. 4th and 5th grade will need to fill out the form for each extra credit book using the link below. 3rd grade students will take an AR test over each extra credit book read upon returning to school in August for credit.
- Secondary Students in grades 6th through 12th must read the novel required for their English class. At the beginning of the school year, there will be a test and/or a writing project based on the novel. Additional worksheets will need to be completed for incoming 10th through 12th grade students.
- New students enrolling before August 1 are required to complete the required reading. Those enrolling thereafter will be given extra time to complete the required assignment.
- Additional books that may be read for extra credit in English and other classes are included. Students may receive one point per book on their final fall semester grade for reading the extra books and writing a prescribed paper – up to three points in all. During the first week of school, students will turn in written verification from their parents that the students have read the books and discussed them with their parents, and the teacher will give a short writing assignment on the book(s) to be completed by the following week.
2023 – 10th through 12th Grade Reading Worksheets
All students in 10th-grade On-Level and Honors will need to complete the 10th grade worksheet. 11th-grade AP English will need to complete both on-level and Honors/AP worksheets. 12th-grade English students will need to complete the 12th grade worksheet.
