On Tuesday, December 6th BCS hosted its first Dine and Development Luncheon for our Juniors and Seniors. This will be a new monthly offering thanks to our office of Academic Advancement and our Registrar, De Shondra Booker. Mrs. Booker stated, “I view our Juniors and Seniors as young professionals so it is important that we create an environment that reflects that. We want to ensure they are ready for the next chapter outside of Brentwood’s halls.”

This first event centered around college essay writing and our guest speaker is a name many will know, Mrs. Becky Stewart. Mrs. Stewart holds a BA in Education and Psychology from the University of Iowa as well as an MEd in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas. Mrs. Stewart also taught and helped develop curriculum at Brentwood from 1978 until she retired in 2016. She taught both at the Elementary and Middle School levels. In her retirement, Becky volunteers with an area medical school admissions team reviewing applicant essays and conducting applicant interviews.

This luncheon was an outstanding opportunity for our students to receive direct insider information on what sets an essay apart. They also obtained feedback on developing an essay that strengthens their overall application. The essay is typically the one opportunity students have to personally introduce themselves to the college’s admissions team. It is the piece of the application that lets them know our students are more than test scores and a GPA. Junior, Colton McLain stated, “It was helpful getting some guidance and having Mrs. Stewart go over the key focal points of writing out your essay”.

Going forward we will continue to offer engaging and helpful lunch seminars on a monthly basis. We are also excited to hear some feedback from our students on what topics should be discussed or added to the agenda.
